What is a load board?

A load board (also called a freight board or freight matching service) is an online marketplace where shippers, freight brokers and carriers post and search for available freight loads. Shippers post loads they need moved; carriers and owner-operators search for loads that match their available capacity and routes.

Load boards connect supply and demand in the spot freight market, helping shippers find capacity and helping carriers fill trucks that would otherwise run empty.

How a load board works

The mechanics are straightforward. A shipper or broker posts a load to the board with the relevant details: origin, destination, freight type, required equipment and any other requirements. Carriers search the board using criteria that match their available truck, location and preferred lanes.

Both parties benefit: the carrier fills idle capacity, and the shipper moves freight that needs a carrier. Most modern load boards include additional functionality beyond the basic posting and search, such as:

  • Credit information and average days to pay for brokers and shippers

  • FMCSA carrier verification and compliance screening

  • Message boards and the ability to annotate shipper or carrier records

  • Factoring services for pre-approved loads

  • Mobile access for drivers and dispatchers

Types of load boards

Load boards vary by purpose and the freight they serve:

  • Traditional load boards: General-purpose forums where freight brokers, shippers and carriers share information on available loads, capacity and destinations

  • LTL load boards: Focused on less-than-truckload freight—shipments that do not fill a trailer on their own and are typically consolidated with other loads

  • Specialty load boards: Cover cargo categories that do not fit standard formats—including livestock, oversized loads, boats and other non-standard freight types

Load boards may be free or subscription-based, with paid boards typically offering deeper functionality, larger networks and more reliable data.
