What is last mile delivery?

Last mile delivery is the final leg of a shipment's journey—from a transportation hub or distribution center to the end destination, typically a consumer's home or a place of business. It is the stage of the supply chain most visible to the customer, and also the most expensive and logistically complex.

The terms "last mile" and "final mile" are often used interchangeably in the freight and logistics industry. Last mile service providers often bundle additional services with delivery—such as assembly, installation, haul-away and scheduled appointments—to meet the expectations of end consumers, particularly for large or bulky items delivered to homes.

Why last mile delivery matters

Last mile delivery is expensive relative to other parts of the supply chain. It is widely cited in the logistics industry as accounting for more than 50 percent of total shipping costs—driven by labor, vehicle routes with many stops and short distances between each, and the expectation of free or same-day delivery that has become standard in e-commerce. The exact figure varies by company, product type and delivery geography; shippers should assess this in their own network rather than relying on a single benchmark.

For retailers and third-party logistics (3PLs) providers, the stakes are high: customers who have a poor delivery experience are likely to choose a competitor next time. Last mile performance is a direct input into customer satisfaction and retention.

Challenges of last mile delivery

Last mile delivery is difficult to optimize because performance depends on factors that vary significantly across every route, every day:

  • Route density: Urban areas have many delivery points close together but high traffic. Rural areas have fewer stops spread across longer distances

  • Order volume and frequency: Larger companies can schedule daily or multi-day pickups; smaller operations may have less frequent carrier pickups, creating delays

  • Proximity to distribution points: The further a warehouse from the delivery zone, the more time and cost each route requires

  • Customer expectations: Tracking visibility, delivery windows, same-day options and free shipping all add operational complexity and cost

  • Returns volume: Last mile providers often manage reverse logistics alongside outbound delivery, adding to route and vehicle planning complexity

The solutions to these challenges vary by business model—a combination of technology, routing improvements and carrier diversification typically produces the best results.
