Implement a continuous flow
To minimize material handling and operative travel, there should be a linear, one-way flow in place. Commonly-implemented designs include:
U-shaped flow: receiving and shipping are adjacent to each other, with goods moving in a horseshoe shape
I-shaped flow: inbound docks are at one end of the building and outbound docks are at another, with goods moving in a straight line
L-shaped flow: inbound docks are on one side of the building and outbound docks are on an adjacent wall—this flow is often used in odd-shaped buildings
Consider order frequency
High-velocity items should be placed at the front near packing stations while slow-velocity items should be placed at the back or top levels.
Placing the fastest-moving items on the middle shelves means operatives don’t have to bend down or reach up, reducing fatigue and the risk of injury.
Plan aisle width based on use
Wide aisles support higher-volume operations with standard forklifts and also allow two-way traffic.
Narrow aisles maximize storage density and are best used with reach trucks, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and very narrow aisle (VNA) forklifts.
