What is task interleaving?
Task interleaving is a productivity strategy that combines multiple warehouse tasks into one distinct workflow.
Instead of operatives completing one task type then returning empty-handed to start another, they are assigned complementary tasks along their travel paths, keeping operatives productive throughout their routes.
For example, a forklift driver needs to take a pallet from the receiving dock and put it in storage. With an interleaving strategy in place, rather than returning to the receiving dock empty-handed, they pick up another pallet to bring to the shipping dock directly afterwards.

When an operative completes an assignment in a specific warehouse zone, the WMS looks for complementary work in that area or along the path back to common starting points, assigning tasks that utilize travel time productively.
Dynamic assignment adjusts task sequences in real time as warehouse conditions change. The WMS continuously evaluates available work, operative positions and priorities to identify the most efficient next task for each person.
