RFID Tracking
What is RFID tracking?
RFID (radio frequency identification) tracking uses radio waves to automatically identify and locate inventory items, assets and shipments without requiring line-of-sight scanning.
RFID tags attached to products or pallets transmit unique identification codes to readers positioned at dock doors, within storage aisles or on mobile devices. This enables real-time inventory visibility and automated transaction recording as items move through warehouse operations.
How RFID inventory management works
Warehouses and distribution centers use dock door RFID readers that scan entire shipments as trucks unload, instantly updating inventory records without manual counting or barcode scanning.
The warehouse management system (WMS) receives tag data, validates against advance ship notices, identifies discrepancies and generates putaway tasks automatically.
RFID portals positioned throughout warehouses and distribution centers detect tag movements, providing real-time location tracking. The WMS automatically updates locations as tagged items pass through reader zones, eliminating cycle counting requirements for RFID-enabled inventory.
RFID asset tracking can also be used with warehouse equipment, tools and returnable containers. This reduces lost equipment costs and improves asset management efficiency.
RFID vs barcode: Key differences
RFID systems read multiple tags simultaneously from distances up to 30 feet, enabling bulk scanning of entire pallets or cartons in seconds. Barcodes require individual scanning with visual alignment between scanner and label. This makes RFID tracking significantly faster for high-volume receiving, shipping and inventory counting operations.
RFID tags store more information than barcodes, including serial numbers, lot codes, manufacturing dates and custom attributes. RFID tags also support read-write capabilities, allowing updates to stored data as products move through the supply chain, while barcodes remain static after printing.
While barcodes are cheaper, warehouse RFID tags deliver a solid return on investment, with labor savings, improved accuracy and real-time visibility.
