What is multi-stop transportation?

Multi-stop transportation is a freight move that includes cargo activities beyond a single pickup at origin and a single delivery at destination. Rather than a direct point-to-point shipment, a multi-stop move visits two or more intermediate locations for additional pickups, deliveries or both.

Multi-stop truckload (MSTL) is the most common form: one truck completes multiple deliveries along a specified route under a single carrier contract. Shippers using multi-stop load planning can also consolidate freight for several customers along a single corridor—reducing the number of trucks on the road and lowering cost per unit shipped.

Types of multi-stop routes

A multi-stop route uses a single carrier and equipment to complete freight movements in one of three configurations:

  • Single pickup, multiple drop: Freight is collected at one origin and delivered to multiple destinations

  • Multiple pickup, single drop: Freight from several origins is consolidated and delivered to one destination

  • Multiple pickup, multiple drop: Freight is collected from and delivered to multiple locations along the same route
