Zone picking
What is zone picking?
Zone picking is a warehouse order fulfillment strategy that assigns pickers to dedicated zones. Pickers only retrieve items from their designated section, with a consolidation process happening before shipping.
This approach reduces congestion, enables picker specialization and supports high-volume operations.
How warehouse zone picking works
The warehouse management system (WMS) divides the warehouse into logical zones based on product categories, storage types and physical layout.
Operators remain within assigned zones, developing familiarity with product locations and efficient picking patterns.
When an order contains items from multiple zones, there are two approaches:
Sequential zone picking: items are added as the order progresses from zone to zone
Simultaneous zone picking: items are picked at the same time before being combined at a consolidation station
Zone picking vs batch picking
The key difference between zone picking and batch picking is how picking is assigned across the warehouse:
Batch picking: a single picker collects items for multiple orders, minimizing repeat trips and improving efficiency
Zone picking: multiple pickers contribute items from designated zones, improving accuracy and reducing congestion
Batch picking works best in high-volume warehouses with fast-moving stock-keeping units (SKUs) or consistent order patterns. Zone picking works best in large warehouses with diverse product mixes where picker congestion would otherwise slow fulfillment.
