What is multimodal transportation?

Multimodal transportation (also called combined transport) is the movement of a freight shipment using at least two different modes of transport—such as road, rail, air and ocean—under a single contract of carriage. One logistics services provider or freight forwarder takes sole legal responsibility for the shipment end-to-end, even when additional carriers are involved in executing individual legs.

Multimodal transportation is common across industries operating in business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) environments. International freight movements almost always require a multimodal strategy: a shipment from a factory overseas to a domestic distribution center may combine ocean, rail and over-the-road trucking before reaching its destination.

Multimodal vs. intermodal transportation

Multimodal and intermodal transportation both involve multiple modes of transit, but differ in how contracts and cargo handling are structured:

  • Multimodal transportation: A single contract covers the entire journey. Cargo may move in different containers between legs. One logistics services provider takes sole legal responsibility for the end-to-end move

  • Intermodal transportation: Multiple contracts are in place—one with each carrier for their leg of the move. Cargo typically stays in the same standardized container throughout. Responsibility passes from one carrier to the next at each handoff

The practical implication: multimodal is simpler to manage from a legal and documentation standpoint, with one party accountable for the full shipment. Intermodal offers container continuity but distributes legal responsibility across multiple parties.
